GERARD MURPHY
Gerard brings to his work the rare combination of the knowledge and skills
of the professional musician and the highly skilled instrument maker and restorer.
He has spent years investigating the acoustical properties of the violin as well
as the characteristics of materials. In his work he uses only the finest woods
and accessories together with his unique recipe of spirit varnish which has the
total appearance and characteristics of an oil varnish.
Gerard makes a limited number of instruments per year for the professional, student,
or good amateur player seeking the power, tone and looks of the best, but at an
affordable price.
In addition to his making, Gerard undertakes both repairs and restorations and
has worked on some of the finest old Italian instruments.
As well as being a specialist in violins and cellos Gerard has good experience
working on the full range of modern classical stringed instruments.
He trained at the London college of Furniture, now called the London Guildhall
University, from 1987-1991. Before that he played as a professional musician
performing on Radio and TV.
Gerard has built up a successful business since leaving college. In his third
year at college he had already completed three commisions for two copies of a
Mathias Albani violin 1705 and a J. B. Vuillaume cello. Jed has many players among
his clientele who value his high quality restoration work and knowing him also
as a string player, can expect only the best in setting-up instruments.
In his spare time he plays a violin in a small ensemble and enjoys writing and
arranging the music
